Formed in 1950 to provide education and to disseminate scientific information about mycology to our membership and the general public, the Mycological Society of San Francisco is one of the largest amateur mushroom societies in the United States.
The MSSF holds monthly meetings featuring mycologists and other guest speakers from around the world. and it publishes the Mycena News, a newsletter that includes field reports, mycological articles, and recipes.
MSSF holds classes ranging from basic mushroom identification to mushroom cultivation, photography, and workshops on specific fungal genera. It also organizes forays, led by experienced and knowledgeable mycologists, to collect fungi in their natural habitat and optimal season. Forays are one of the best ways for new members to learn about the mycology of California
Once a year, the MSSF holds its largest event, the Fungus Fair, to expose the general public to mycological matters. It features expert speakers, educational exhibits, and vendors. The Fair also brings our members together to collect, identify, and display mushrooms from all around the Bay Area.
The MSSF sponsors a Culinary Group, a group of MSSF members interested in cooking and eating mushrooms. It meets from September through May to share a dinner prepared by the members.
